Google South Africa has just released its Year in Search 2018 report showing what people in South Africa have been searching for online this year. This provides some interesting insight into what peaks South Africans’ online interests and offers a snapshot of the past year!
Here are the top 10 Google searches by South Africans in 2018…
10) Mac Miller
The platinum hip-hop star Mac Miller passed away on 7 September 2018. Fans from Free State, Gauteng and Eastern Cape were the top searchers when the news broke.
9) Meghan Markle
The Duchess of Sussex had mostly Western Cape, Northern Cape and Eastern Cape googling her name in May when she married Prince Harry.
8) Black Panther
In February the Marvel superhero film, Black Panther premiered and became the highest grossing film in South African history. isiXhosa is the official language of Wakanda and its people, while those amazing natural scenes of rolling hills and grasslands of Wakanda were filmed right here in South Africa’s Golden Gate Highlands National Park. Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape had the top searches for Black Panther.
The biggest listeriosis outbreak in the world hit South Africa this year and South Africans had reason to fear some of their favourite processed meats. At the beginning of September South Africa’s Minister of Health, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi announced that the outbreak was over. Mostly people from Eastern Cape, Limpopo and Mpumalanga were searching for details on Listeriosis in 2018.
South Africa’s Hip-Hop pioneer, Jabulani Tsambo (Hip-Hop Pantsula or HHP) sadly passed away at the age of 38 on 24 October 2018 leaving a huge gap in South African music and culture.
5) Winnie Mandela
On 2 April 2018 anti-apartheid activist, politician and Member of Parliament of South Africa, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela passed away.
In February 2018 Jacob Zuma resigned as president of South Africa. Zuma left the nation’s leadership in the hands of the ruling African National Congress’s new leader, Cyril Ramaphosa. Most searches of SA’s former president came from people in Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.
3) Global Citizen
Global Citizen brought together its largest contingency of heads of state, dignitaries, a group of the world’s most talented artists and influencers, and thousands of global citizens to celebrate the centenary of Nelson Mandela on 2 December 2018. The most searches for Global Citizen came from Gauteng, North West and Northern Cape as people were trying to earn their tickets!
2) Load Shedding
Eskom blackouts hit Mzansi again this year and reportedly South Africans could be in the dark for the next few months as Eskom struggles with coal shortages and high costs. People from all 9 South Africa provinces ranked high searching for “Load Shedding”.
1) World Cup Fixtures
The 2018 FIFA World Cup was hosted by Russia this year from June to July and marked the 21st FIFA World Cup soccer/football tournament. The majority of searches for the World Cup Fixtures were from people in KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo!
