Whenever we journey through the Southern Drakensberg mountains in South Africa, Monique van der Walt (AKA Monique van der KZN) comes to mind. We are very excited to catch up with Monique, a passionate tourism entrepreneur, about her love for KwaZulu-Natal and travel in South Africa. She’s built a strong brand in the South African travel sector and have recently opened her own self-catering Airbnb cottage!
“I sold my flat in Cape Town and moved into the KZN mountains”
Although I was born and raised in Cape Town, I found my heart in KZN while living here between 2006 to 2014. In 2015 I moved back to my birth city where it took me 7 months to realise the next part of my life’s journey.
Now ex-corporate PR (& some social media) in the Energy and Retail sectors, I sold my flat in Cape Town and moved into the KZN mountains, simply following Gods plan and trusting He would make a way.
“I decided to make it my mission to capture and share KZN”
I arrived in KwaZulu-Natal in late 2015, bought myself a Canon Camera, and decided to make it my mission to capture, share and promote KZN on social media, finding content producers and adding them mobile notifications (max of 400 at any given time on Twitter). And so for the last two years, 14 to16 hours a day, 365 days a year, I’ve constantly shared KZN, as well as generate daily personal content of my area, the Southern Drakensberg.
“I recently opened my own self-catering Airbnb cottage”
I’ve built a little bit of a brand doing this, and now I do paid jobs for brands looking to increase their social media presence, mainly in the tourism industry.
I also recently opened my own self-catering cottage / Airbnb (Twitter & Instagram: @cottageimvana, web: cottageimvana.com).
God did indeed make a way.
“Nowhere fills my heart like my own country”
I’ve travelled many times over seas: Singapore, New Zealand, USA (including Hawaii), England, Europe (Italy, Austria, France, Switzerland), Nigeria, but there is nowhere that fills my heart like my own country. We have a common bond through our turmoil, through our joy, through our trials and for the love of this beautiful South Africa.
“Some of my most exciting and life-changing South Africa travel experiences…”
Packing as much as I could into my Hyundai Atos and driving from Cape Town, knowing only that somewhere in KZN would be my final destination.
Second would have to be my 2018 Sani Pass trip when it was snowing
And thirdly, I love cows and I love goats. So anytime I see them, it’s a favourite travel experience 😊
